Jon Birchall and the iconic Blackpool Tower

  Day 1

Here’s Jon right at the start, on what we were told was a typical Blackpool Day, an on-shore North Westerly gale! Why start at Blackpool, you may well ask? Well it’s a coastal ride and Blackpool is an iconic British coastal resort, thats why!

Our friends and supporters came out in force to wave Jon off and to rattle the collecting tins only the disappointing weather prevented anyone from standing about unless they had to! It was dry but cool and oh so windy. Jon reckoned he was still crunching Blackpool sand in his teeth when we stopped near Mold for the night.

(From L to R) Daniel Whiston, the Mayoress of Blackpool, Sarah Birchall, The Mayor of Blackpool and Jon Birchall

We had wonderful support from the Mayoress and Mayor of Blackpool, Peter and Maxine Callow, David Cam the Under Sheriff of the County Palatine of Lancaster, Dancing on Ice skater Daniel Whiston, and all the friends family, bikers and supporters who came along to wish us well with the ride. After four months of planning actually starting the ride was quite an emotional experience for both Jon and Sarah, and will continue to be so over the course of the next four months.

Jon with Hector the Mascot and Thunderbird 1

Paul McKnight

On the stroke of 12 Jon left the Comedy Carpet to loud cheers with Paul McKnight accompanying him to just beyond Southport. Paul knew the roads and was an excellent rider, Jon enjoyed that bit very much and it settled any pre-event nerves.

Sarah caught up with Jon at Speke Hall, a National Trust Property near Liverpool, and we met with Sarah’s Aunt and Uncle over a cup of tea. A very late sandwich was very kindly provided by the Manager of the Restaurant and all the NT staff wished Jon well on his incredible journey which was now underway.
